The new shelter

Kenton County officials say a new, expanded, and renovated animal shelter will help them find more homes for adoptable animals.

The 7,780-square-foot adoption center on Mary Laidley Drive in Fort Mitchell will house adoptable dogs and cats, a training facility, a retail sales shop, a grooming area, and offices. The recently-completed expansion added about 1000 square feet to the facility.

The first Kenton County Animal Shelter opened in 1985. Officials say they handle some 6500 unwanted and stray animals each year.  About 1000 pets who pass health and temperament tests and cannot be reunited with their families are adopted out each year. But officials wanted to make sure they have more room for healthy, adoptable animals.

The new building has easy-viewing cages and indoor "get acquainted" areas for families to interact with animals. There is also room for obedience classes and a shop where animal lovers can buy toys, treats, collars, leashes, and other goodies for cats and dogs. The  old shelter building was renovated to better accommodate animal intake, stray holding, and treatment areas.  Adoption fees for dogs and cats are $80. Pet owners can also go to the new facility to purchase animal licenses and tags, get micro-chipping,

The KCAS is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:30 am to 5 pm. Wednesday and Saturday hours are 10:00 am to 2 pm. For more information, call 859-356-7400.
