You may remember in July, I wrote an article outlining a study by the Centers for Disease Control, which found that pets were among the most common causes of falls for American adults. In fact, the CDC linked more than 86,000 falls a year to pets.

Now one company has come up with an innovative product to help prevent such accidents.

The "LoveMyPets" safety collar costs about $20. It uses glow pigments to reflect ambient light and make pets more visible to prevent trips and falls by their owners in the dark.

The collar can glow up to 12 hours and recharges in daylight. It includes a leash clip.

The company says collar can also save make dogs and cats more visible by motorists if the animal should wander out into the road, by reflecting headlights. The collars may also help animal owners locate their pets in the event of a power outage or emergency.

The collar is available in a variety of sizes ranging from small dogs and cats to large dogs. Some collars even have an optional cat bell. They're available in most pet stores.

There are other ways to prevent tripping over your pet.  The best way, and perhaps the most time-consuming, is obedience class, to specifically teach your pet to stay out from underfoot.

Make sure bowls and toys are kept out of the way and pick up after your pet before turning in for the night.  You should also use nightlights around the house at night.  And make sure your pet's bed is kept in an area away from where you walk or sleep at night.

Experts also suggest putting your pet in another room before carrying anything that impedes your vision or anything that is heavy into the home.
