It’s often said that men have it much easier when it comes to fashion. For work, a button-down shirt and khakis or suit suffice. For summer play, they can never go wrong with khaki shorts and a polo. For ladies, it’s more complicated. Take the Travelers Championship in Cromwell – or the many other golf events throughout the season. While guys can throw on – what else? – a pair of khakis and polo to watch the event, what’s a woman in the gallery to wear?

The classic women’s golf ensemble is similar to the men’s – a polo shirt and khaki skirt or shorts. But the fashion rules of the game have become more flexible over the years. Before you run out to purchase an ensemble for the green, check your closet. You might have the perfect outfit hanging right in there!

Capris or knee-length shorts with a short-sleeve button-down – A slight variation on the polo-short combo, this look is more classic than preppy. Add a pair of strappy sandals and a necklace for the ultimate in tourney chic.

Sundress – Perfect for high-temperature days, the sundress is comfortable and versatile. Choose a cotton or jersey frock to avoid over-dressing, and pair with a leather belt or several wooden necklaces. Slide into flats or flops and you’re ready to go!

Tee and skirt – For a sporty look, try a skirt (not too short – think mid-thigh), a fitted tee-shirt and cap with a cute pair of sneakers. Choose a one-color tee rather than graphic ones, which are too casual.

Shirtdress – While usually worn in the office, a cotton shirtdress can easily be transformed into a casual summer outfit. Add some prep appeal with a cotton stretch belt and simple slide sandals. If you’re planning to go to dinner afterward, swap sandals for heels, remove the belt and add a nice piece of jewelry.

A few additional tips to stay on par:

  • Always wear sunscreen. Even if the sky is cloudy, the sun’s rays will reach your skin.
  • If the sun is shining brightly, pack your sunglasses and a hat for protection.
  • Opt for sensible shoes, as you’ll likely do a lot of walking. Sneakers, flats or sandals are the best options. Avoid heels, or you risk sinking into the ground and a few blisters!
