Winter coat shopping is perhaps more fun than it’s ever been. This season’s coats do double duty, keeping you warm with wool, faux fur and big collars while making the ultimate fashion statement. Choose from a variety of details when buying a coat to protect you from the harsh (and sometimes unpredictable!) Connecticut winters:

Faux fur
Building on the faux fur vest trend, designers this year tapped into their animal instincts, using it in coat details or for the entire piece. The result: a luxe look.

Ruffles
The ruffle trend has migrated, now dominating coats as well. Whether traveling down the front, across the side or even along the bottom, ruffles are sure to make your coat stand out from the crowd. Tip: Stay away from ruffled accessories, like hats and gloves, to avoid overkill.

Plaids
Coats – both short and long – make an even stronger impression in trendy plaid. Prevent pattern competition by pairing it with neutral pants, skirts and dresses.

Military jackets
A strong shape, big, gleaming buttons and sharp details like belts and tabover detailing make versatile military jackets tough and appealing.

Exaggerated details
Bell sleeves, oversize and funnel neck collars, empire and drop waists and A-line cuts make otherwise simple coats pieces of art. Wear these coats with anything – even jeans and a tee shirt – and you’ll still look like a fashion icon!
