Not since January 1, 2000 has any date incited more apocalyptic media hype than the new December 21, 2012. The official end of the Mayan calendar, the end of Obama's first term or, as some naysayers are referring to it, the end of the world. The scare tactics alone have sent people scurrying to buy survival supplies to prepare for the end of days. Someone is definitely getting rich off this. Which of course, begs the question: why do they need the money if there won’t be any way to spend it?
Anytime the universe closes a door, one is opened. One might seek comfort in the idea that the coming of 2012 signals a birth of a new paradigm. Not the death of the earth as a whole per se but the shedding of old, antiquated ideas that no longer serve mankind. In John L Petersen’s book A Vision for 2012: Planning for Extraordinary Change he opens chapter one with a quote by R. Buckminster Fuller that reads “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” Perhaps we have finally entered into a phase for true change. Maybe a gift has presented itself to the whole of human kind and the time to embrace and build upon this gift, this “new model” has finally come to pass. It appears that this time is now.
Doomsday has forever been a favorite topic among pundits, prophets and fortunetellers. This is not to say that pundits, prophets and fortunetellers don’t ever have anything of value to say-many have and still do contribute much to our collective consciousness. Another important quote comes to mind however whenever the 2012 hype rears its ugly head. It is one by another famous person in history and what he said is so very appropriate here: “there is nothing to fear but fear itself”. Indeed, nothing.
