
Microsoft has announced the launch this week of the new Wireless N Network Adapter for the Xbox 360. The new dual band adapter is designed to increase performance and make use of the N networking standard. According to Microsoft this will allow for “two times the range and a speed seven times faster than before”.
The adapter’s release is in line with the offering of new High Definition downloadable content such as streaming music and movies available through Xbox LIVE. The device sports two external antennas with 802.11a/b/g and n connectivity and is integrated into the system by standard attachment to the back of the console. In addition the adapter features WPA2 security support.
Additional specifications include dual band 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wireless A/B/G home network compatibility, compact design, console power source, and it is compatible with Windows Vista Media Center.
Just in time for the start of the holiday shopping season, the Wireless N Networking Adapter will be available for an estimated retail price of $99.99, while the old network adapter will receive a nominal price cut to $79.99 while supplies last. A quick look at various online shopping sources indicates a ship date of November 12, 2009.
