Starbucks joined a long list of Northwest companies that have endorsed Referendum 71 in Washington State. If approved, R-71 would keep the domestic partnership law, which provides legal protections for lesbian and gay couples and seniors who are in committed relationships.
In a statement, the specialty coffee company said,
[Approving the measure] ensures that basic benefits and important protections are not taken away from committed couples, so they are able to take care of each other, especially in times of crisis."
Starbucks support shouldn't come as a surprise. For years, the coffee giant has provided domestic partner benefits. It aligns with the company's guiding principles to treat each other with "respect and dignity".
Last month, Boeing, Nike, Microsoft, Puget Sound Energy, RealNetworks and Vulcan issued a joint statement in favor of the referendum. Washington voters head to the polls next week on November 3.
