Cast of Parks and Recreation

Last season had me worried for NBC's Parks and Recreation.  Sure, the subject matter is pretty much new, but that faux documentary comedy is so overdone now.  And the show seemed to want to rest squarely on Amy Poehler's capable comedic shoulders.  The only problem with that is her character, Leslie Knope, was by far the most annoying of them all.  Sure, when you look at the original faux documentary success show, The Office, Michael's character is really frakking annoying, and the show has still managed to work for quite some time (although recently it makes me want to punch something, or simply curl into the fetal position and cry).  But Poehler's character just made me feel sad for her - perhaps the writers did too good of a job at making her look pathetic.

Thankfully, this season, she's back, funny, and not nearly as sad of a creature.  And the other characters are promising to make the show a long term success.  Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari) is hilarious as the rec employee who keeps Leslie from being a total tool.  I've noticed this season his lines make her look funny in her naivete, such as this last episode when he told her that he knew the Latin names for the flowers in her community garden, but they were actually rapper names.  Hilarious!  Rashida Jones is perfectly cast as the straight girl character, Ann.  And, as I mentioned in the article I wrote about the show during its first season, Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) is simply awesome as the head of Parks and Recreation who thinks government spending is a sin.  But my all-time fave of the show is definitely Andy (Chris Pratt), Ann's ex-boyfriend who initially fell into the pit, and is now homeless due to their breakup.  I know it's a lofty expectation, but I truly believe he can make the show.  Not to mention, he recently wed Anna Faris, making them one of the funniest power comedy couples in Hollywood since the Amy Poehler/Will Arnett pairing!  Nice!
