Dim sum is a type of Chinese cuisine that is usually served as an early day meal, but many places serve it all day. Typically, it's made up of many small dishes that are steamed or fried, and sharing is encouraged. It's a staple of Chinese tradition and cuisine, and best of all, it's cheap! There are literally countless Chinese restaurants and dim sum shops all over San Francisco, but one that I have frequented is Good Luck Dim Sum in the Inner Richmond.
Good Luck Dim Sum is a small dim sum restaurant that mainly serves pick-up and to-go orders, but they also have a small dining area where you can have a seat and enjoy some tea with your dim sum. The menu has all the typical dim sum items you would expect, as well as a few house specialties. All items are served as a group of three, except for the single items which have their own menu. The menu is broken down into simple categories - 3 for $1.40, 3 for $1.50, $0.60 each, and Other.
These are some of my favorite items:
3 for $1.40
3 for $1.50
$0.60 each
Other
I highly suggest ordering more than you think you want, because they make great leftovers and it's affordable, so stock up! Dim sum is a great way to get your fill for only a few dollars, provided you don't mind treating yourself to some fried items (which in this case is totally worth it). Good Luck Dim Sum is open everyday except Tuesday, from 7am to 6:30pm and there is often a line forming before the doors even open! If you want to avoid the lines, go after the early morning crowd or after the lunch crowd. The downside is that many of the items will be sold out, so if you want your pick, arrive early! You can find Good Luck Dim Sum at 736 Clement St. between 8th Ave and 9th Ave in the Inner Richmond.
