This will be the case if trucks are allowed to haul heavier.

I have to ask the question, and I have been driving for 15 years. How safe is it to allow truck drivers to haul more weight? Tractor and trailers are allowed to haul 80,000 lbs. right now on 47,000 miles of interstates. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, and Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, have introduced a bill to allow states to increase the maximum weight from 80,000 to 97,000 lbs. gross weight.

We have all seen trucks going down some of the mountains out west, hauling 80,000 lbs. and seen them sitting at the bottom of the mountain putting the flames out from his/her brakes.

These people wanting this bill passed, I wonder have they taken into consideration about all the accidents that will occur, from inexpierienced drivers hauling at 97,000 lbs.? I wonder if they have even thought about how much more maintenance will be involved, when hauling heavier?

Back in the day when I was hauling coal, rock, and sand in a tractor trailer dump, we hauled heavy everywhere we went. I hauled loads in excess of 120,000 lbs, lot's of times. I did this for for several years, and was never so glad to finally find a job hauling loads at 80,000 lbs. or less. I hope there is a part of this bill, if it IS passed that say's you will need a certain amount of driving expierience BEFORE you are allowed to haul 97,000 lbs.

I also hope, that these states that have the mountains running through them will refuse to allow this kind of weight to be hauled without a permit. The permit would need to be signed by an expierienced HEAVY haul driver. One that actually knows how to slow a HEAVY truck down to a STOP. But, these people who thought this joke of a bill up ALSO CLAIM this will save on fuel, HOW?

How in the world, do you actually think hauling HEAVIER can ever save on fuel? Why do you think, race cars are built as light as they are? Races now days are won on fuel milage, if heavier is better then you would see NASCAR running tanks? It does not take a genius to figure out, that you add more weight, it will take more power to get it moving, and up to speed and in turn will BURN more fuel to pull a mountain!

I really can't help to think this is some sort of cover up for something MUCH worse coming. That we will NOT find out until they get this bill passed, or at least try to get it passed. I know that my Senators and Represenatives will be receiveing MORE calls from myself about this, as I have already been in contact with them, explaining to them how this is a BAD idea, all the way around.

This is what everybody, needs to do NOW is start contacting your Senators and Represenatives, and explaining to them what the effects will be when trucks are ALLOWED to haul heavier. We already have way to many crashes now, with trucks running at 80,000 lbs. or less.

My final question, to these so called smart people.

Who is going to train these drivers to be able to SAFELY go down the road weighing 17,000 lbs. more?
