In the early 1980s, Michael Jackson might have sold more than the Boss. But Bruce Springsteen was the critical favorite. Even before his mainstream breakout album Born in the USA, Bruce was on the top of every critic’s list. When Born in the USA was released, he not only overshadowed Michael Jackson, but made other stars seem irrelevant. The Boss had more dedicated fans than any artist of the 1980s.
Michael Jackson faded out after the 1980s. Bruce Springsteen continued his success, especially with his 2002 album The Rising that comforted the nation after the 911 disaster. His last two albums, Magic and Working on a Dream, have been two of the most critically acclaimed albums of the past decade. Take that, Mr. self-titled “King of Pop!”
