Mariah Carey can’t seem to do anything right these days. Her last album, E=MC2, was considered an international bomb and her upcoming album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, may actually be from Hell judging from the fact that it has suddenly been delayed.
Part of the delay might have to do with the extremely disappointing performance of the first single, ‘Obsessed,” which is struggling at radio. Others suspect that she wants more of a distance between the release date of her album and her abortion of a performance for Michael Jackson's funeral.
It is important to note that the song did debut at #11 this past week – but this is due to the fact the song was just released to iTunes several weeks after it went to radio. Repressing downloads of a first single from a major artist such as Mariah Carey should guarantee a number one hit the week it is released. “Obsessed” shot up the iTunes chart the first couple days of its release and hit number four. Since then, the song has started to tumble down. Because Mariah’s number #11 position was heavily dependent on iTunes sales, she is expected to take a bad tumble next week. It looks like #11 will be the song’s peak.
Being almost 40 years old, it’s hard for an artist like Mariah to score a hit in an ageist industry. The fact that she dresses like a stuffed-sausage prostitute doesn’t help her cause. She’s definitely not a superstar like Madonna or Cher, whose audiences may laugh at their outfits but still buy their music because it is actually good. Let’s hope Mariah doesn’t look at the Billboard Charts this coming week when “Obsessed” is expected to fall; she may just start to do a strip tease while handing out popsicles to everybody once again.
