Vote in the Citysearch poll for the best Chicago hot dog
The online city guide, Citysearch, is holding its own version of a hot dog war by asking people to vote for the best hot dog restaurant in Chicago. Voting stays open for one more day so hop on over to Citysearch to cast your votes for best encased meat, along with best pizza, steak, Italian beef, and a variety of other Chicago classics. Winners will be announced late on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009.
The list of contenders for Citysearch's hot dog poll include famous restaurants that have been featured in Examiner.com's own hot dog war, lesser-known but great hot dogs stands, some restaurants that don't deserve to be included, and a couple restaurants that this Examiner will have to try before committing to a vote -- although Hot Doug's will be hard to beat.
Here's a tipsheet for this year's Citysearch hot dog contenders:
- Dugout (Burbank, IL): Hopefully a hidden gem, because info on this hot dog stand is sparse, other than reviewers claiming it serves great food.
- Wiener & Still Champion (Evanston, IL): Previously a winner in Citysearch's Best Fries category, Wiener also serves top-notch hot dogs and corn dogs.
- Byron's Hot Dog Haus (Chicago, IL): Looks are deceiving when the restaurant is located in a shack; Byron's is the defending Citysearch 2007 hot dog restaurant champion.
- U Lucky Dawg (Chicago, IL): When there are so many stellar hot dog restaurants and stands in Chicago, this one shouldn't have made the list. U Lucky Dawg (previously Fluky's) recently closed its doors.
- Portillo's Hot Dogs (Chicago, IL; multiple locations): Famous for hot dogs and Depression-era decor, Portillo's may be one of the biggest hot dog restaurant chains in the U.S. with more than 45 locations.
- fRedhots and Fries (Glenview, IL): Serving foot-long hot dogs, what's not to love? fRedhots was recently a featured Chicago restaurant when comedian dougieluv and his documentary film crew came to town.
- Paradise Pup (Des Plaines, IL): This suburban hot dog hot spot always has a line out the door no matter what the time of day.
- Scooter's Frozen Custard (Chicago, IL): With frozen custard the main dish at Scooter's, the Red Hot Chicago hot dog, served with red relish, is relegated to a side dish.
- Clark Street Dog (Chicago, IL): Perfect for late-night hot dog runs, Clark Street Dog also serves beer along with an assortment of other Chicago food classics.
- Gene and Jude's (River Grove, IL): Down by the river, don't ask for ketchup, otherwise you'll miss out on a greasy hot dog from Gene and Jude's.
- The Dog Joint (Chicago, IL): Located in what was once Rockstar Dogs in Lincoln Park, The Dog Joint offers dogs for just $2.39.
- Jimmy's Red Hots (Chicago, IL): Other than the hot dogs, Polish sausage is a favorite menu choice at the shack that is called Jimmy's Red Hots.
- Superdawg Drive-In (Chicago, IL): Recently the winner in the ultimate hot dog war, Superdawg attempts to blow away the competition with specialty smoked hot dogs and lots of TV credits.
- Fat Tommy's (Chicago, IL): Recently relocated to a larger space, Fat Tommy's is more than just a restaurant; with pictures of hot dog restaurants around the world, Fat Tommy's also looks like a hot dog museum.
- Hot Doug's (Chicago, IL): Known for gourmet sausages, Hot Doug's also serves traditional corn dogs and Chicago-style hot dogs that taste anything but traditional (in a good way).
- Wolfy's (Chicago, IL): Decoration at Wolfy's includes a Mona Lisa eating a hot dog; once a hopping place, attendence has cooled in recent years, but Wolfy's still offers up a mean dog.
