Someone asked me the other day if they should wash the barbecue grate after every use to reduce the risk of contaminating the meat next time they grill. Well there is some good news to debunk this common barbecue myth.
Normal barbecue start up procedures actually takes care of this problem without us even knowing. When you light your grill, the heating of the barbecue grate will actually kill the bacteria that might be festering there. You can of course, clean the grill grate prior to, or after grilling. Either way the heating of the grill grate kills the bacteria. You also want to consider cleaning your barbecue utensils after EVERY use to reduce the risk of contamination, plus if you have an elaborate outdoor cooking are, be sure to clean all surfaces that may have come in contact with any raw meats and or its’ juices, or packaging.
Just using a few basic food-handling precautions, along with general cleaning you should be able to nip any bacterial problem before it starts.
