Just one point.
That's all it takes - an overtime loss against the Panthers tonight at the Wachovia Center will clinch a playoff spot for the Flyers (42-25-11).
But, here is the interesting part:
-The Devils can clinch the Atlantic division with a single point tonight against Toronto OR if the Flyers only get one point or less against Florida.
-The Penguins can also clinch a playoff spot (and jump into a tie with the Flyers) if they get a win against Tampa Bay.
Why does all of that matter?
Because the Flyers, interestingly enough, beating the Panthers helps out both the Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens. Why? Because the Panthers will severely hurt their playoff chances if they don't win tonight in Philadelphia.
This game matters for both teams.
For the Flyers, it matters even more so because they don't want to leave their playoff hopes to their three remaining games. The Rangers (twice) and the Islanders are the only two teams left on the regular season agenda. But don't look at the Islanders as a gimme-game. If you remember correctly, the Flyers traveled to Long Island less than two weeks ago and were manhandled by the lowly Islanders for the first two periods.
It isn't impossible, especially with the way they have been playing, that they Flyers drop all four remaining games a la the Mets in 2007.
Don't forget, last year's deep playoff run began with the Flyers squeaking into the playoffs on the last weeked on the season as the 6th seed. Want to know the interesting part? It was the Panthers, beating Carolina, that got the Flyers into the playoffs on a Friday night.
In a lot of ways, it all comes down to the Panthers. Just like last year.
