The AFI Dallas International Film Festival is coming up on March 26-April 2. Just like every year before, the 2009 festival promises to be awesome, but this year, there's one particular film I am absolutely thrilled about: Art & Copy.
Art & Copy is a sneak peek into the ad industry and the psychology behind its ability to change the way people feel and behave. I've been in the advertising industry since before I even graduated college, so it's true that I am a certifiable ad geek. But I don't think you have to be an ad geek like me to be excited about this film. If you're interested in pop culture, there's no denying that advertising molds and shapes what's going around us constantly. Advertising shapes our nation and culture and its psychology moreso than any other one industry. And perhaps the greatest irony? Advertising is all build around art. Those of us who create it are the artists and writers who grew up fighting the man. Then we became the man with the power to influence the nation's behavior. Ah, the existential dilemma.
The film features interviews from notable ad peeps like Lee Clow (Apple Computer 1984 and today's iPod), Dan Wieden ("Just Do It"), Mary Wells ("I Love New York") and Cliff Freeman ("Where's the beef"). The documentary will be shown on March 31 at 7:00pm at the Northpark Center #2 and on April 1 at 10:00pm again at the Northpark Center #2.
