Texas Discovery Gardens is one of Dallas' most unknown and unappreciated attractions. The Fair Park garden is a botanical collection of native plants spread across 7.5 acres. Unlike those at the more popular Dallas Arboretum, the plants at Texas Discovery Gardens are selected to provide habitat for bugs, butterflies and native birds. So, chances are that while you're there, you might bump into a creepy-crawly or two. If it's the colorful butterflies you're hoping to run into, an incredible butterfly house will be opening this September.

The Texas Discovery Gardens is one of my favorite places to visit in town. So, I was psyched to learn that they're putting an art spin on the experience and inviting local artists to be a part of it all. TDG is offering sculptors the chance to create a piece of work from a large section of the trunk of a Cottonwood Tree that once shaded the grounds.

Interested? Here's what you need to know:

(All info from texasdiscoverygardens.org)

The mission of Texas Discovery Gardens is to have a positive impact on the future of Texas by teaching people effective ways to restore, conserve and preserve nature in the urban environment through the use of native and adapted plants that illustrate the interrelationship of butterflies, bugs and botany.

• Sculpture must reflect our mission.

• Sculpture may be one or more pieces, encompass the entire truck or smaller pieces, may be carved from slices, etc.

• Depending on the size of the finished product, the carving will be displayed in the lobby or conference/library room in our main building where thousands of people will view it yearly.

• Sculptor may leave promotional materials at Texas Discovery Gardens to advertise future exhibits or commission work.

• Actual sculpting should begin soon to preserve the integrity of the wood, so once the artist is selected he/she should be able to start this project immediately.

• At least the initial carving will need to be done on site as this is a big piece of wood.

We are accepting proposals for the next four weeks. Applicants may stop by the Gardens to view the tree section in question before they draw up their proposal.

Call to make an appointment for a staff person to show the tree section.

Please send your proposal, resume and photos of past work to:
