Even if you don't know what it's called, chances are you recognize the Mexican Catholic icon Our Lady of Guadeloupe. From t-shirts to tattoos to air fresheners, you can catch sightings of the Virgin all around town (in some parts of town more than others), but none will be quite as impressive as the first time you come across an artistic interpretation of the icon. Our Lady of Guadeloupe has long been one of my favorite subjects when it comes to art; a subject that often acts as a vessel for stories of childhood, grief, family, religion and society. No matter what the interpretation, intense emotion is always present.
Next week is your last chance to check out the 17th Annual La Virgen de Guadalupe Art Exhibition at the Ice House Cultural Center. The show features a collection of art inspired by Our Lady of Guadeloupe that's never before seen at the Ice House. Be sure to drop by Tuesday through Saturday (with the exception of New Year's Day), from 1 to 6 to witness the Virgin before she's gone.
