Call me Scrooge, but I've never been much into Christmas. Throughout my childhood, I was absolutely terrrified of Santa Claus. Despite the tremors of terror than ran through my body upon sight of his bearded face, my mother tried year after year to get that picture-perfect pose of me on Santa's lap. The kicking and screaming fits I brought on in full force at each year's Santa visit seemed to bewilder other kids and greatly amuse adults. By the time I got over my fear of Santa, I was too old to enjoy it, but my family will never grow tired of teasing me about it.
So, maybe it's Santa's fault that I've never gotten super excited about Christmas like a lot of people I know, but that's never stopped me from being thrilled about winter. While other people are decorating their homes in bells and sleighs, I prefer snowflakes and snowmen.
If you're like me and love winter, or maybe you're just a little tired of Christmas and all the parties and events that come along with it, this Friday's Winter SolstiCelebration offers a little something different while still being festive. Even if you don't consider yourself a spiritual person, this Winter Solstice event (the second largest in the country) will still offer music, theater, food (chocolate communion!) and a silent auction to keep your cold, black heart entertained.
