Dog Beach, CA located within the city of Ocean Beach reported a sewage spill of 15,000 gallons on June 30th.  A sign announces “contaminated water” as you enter the beach but it is easy to either miss or ignore.  Not to mention, posting the details is not common practice.  People tend to walk right past the sign with their dog and proceed to allow their best friend to jump into some seriously bacteria ridden water after the coveted tennis ball.

Though dogs certainly process foreign bacteria much different than humans do, its still not a good idea to expose your dog to sewage bacteria.  Drinking out of a mud puddle or the flushed toilet bowl is different than 14,850 gallons of sewage!

The spill in Ocean Beach early this week was caused by debris blockage in a manhole, according to the City of San Diego Waste and Water Department.  None of the sewage was recovered.  Warning signs about the contamination are posted and will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.

Many people are on vacation this week coming into the 4th of July holiday and are looking for fun things to do with the family dog.  An alternative to the OB dog beach is Fiesta Island.  There is a variety of activities for the whole family and a leash free dog area allows for plenty of frolicking in the water.

You can go out and have some fun with your dog and find some cool new San Diego places to go.  Remember a tired dog is a good dog and is a part of any good dog training regime.  The outdoors, exercise and fresh water are good for you and for your dog.
