You are what you eat right? You’ve heard it for years. Doesn’t really matter what species you are this statement holds true. Unfortunately for dogs for the most part what they eat is pretty gross on the nutritional side and the tasty cuisine aspect as well.
Some dog owners go all the way to the other end of the spectrum and go with a full raw diet. While there are those that buy whatever kibble is the cheapest and feed the same exact meal every single day for a dog’s lifetime. Then there are those in the middle that don’t want to deal with the raw diet, and I can’t say I blame them, but want a better food for their beloved dog. Premium dog kibble seems to be the answer.
This is true for some of the premium dog food that is on the market and not true for a lot of it. Though it is packaged and sold as organic using the best of ingredients, with a little research you’ll find it might not be so great at all for your dog. The processing and ingredients don’t exactly match the implied quality.
As a professional reality dog trainer, and by that I mean I believe in all things realistic from training to your dog’s diet. Some rules in dog training people are just not going to do so instead make the rules realistic, and the same goes with a dogs diet. Are you going to go to the store and pick the best of ingredients to put in the Cuisinart to prepare the dog’s meal everyday when in actuality you eat at the local deli half the time to save time and effort? Of course not.
Instead here are some things you can do to make sure your dog is getting some good nutrition, including some live enzymes in the system. First make it easy on yourself by finding a good kibble as a staple in the diet. What's In Dog Food
Then add small amounts of the things that are in your own healthy diet like carrots, apples, yogurt, or a few pieces beef or chicken to the kibble at the same time you are preparing your own meals. The reality of it is you’ll be able to get this done versus creating a huge project of the dogs food to ensure a nutritious diet.
Keep in mind there are foods your dog should not have and can actually be quite harmful. This is not a complete list but a few of the biggies are grapes, raisins, onions or any onion derivative, chocolate, or any artificial sweetener, especially the sugar less variety.
As with your own diet, the simple whole raw varieties are always best for nutritional value. The more processing, sugar, or high sodium content the more likely it isn’t good for you or your dog. After all the current world’s oldest dog is known to eat some real whole food in his diet. You are what you eat holds true for dogs too.
