I attended the premier for Kelsey Landry’s short film “The Date.” This funny little film was as cute as it is quirky. The opening credits are exceptionally well-done and give a great set-up to the punch line at the end of the film.
The story is great fun with solid characters. The film follows a date with Jessica (Elecia Avila) and Brodie (Ryan Johnson) a long time couple who have “plateaued.” According to the official synopsis of the film, "Today was supposed to be the best day of Jessica's life, until her perfect date goes horribly wrong. Through a web of miscommunication and surprises, Jessica and Brodie's relationship moves to a whole new level, but maybe not the same level."
Landry has put together a great first film. The funny moments are there, the audience understands the story and the actors are engaging. This little comedy has nice camera work, great art work and decent acting. Brodie's roommate (Steve Bethers) stole the show with his bowl of cereal from the second he was introduced.
The volunteer cast and crew did a great job putting together a professional quality short. The color and sound were off during the screening, but Producer Terry Spazek said it was a problem with the projector. I would love to watch the film again on DVD to a properly calibrated player."The Date" will begin making rounds on the festival circuit this month.
