In last month's Entry Draft, the Phoenix Coyotes selected Justin Weller in the 4th round (105th overall).
Weller is a 6-3, 200 pound native of Daysland, Alberta. The defenseman spent last year playing junior hockey for Red Deer of the Western Hockey League. Weller played in 32 games last season, recording three assists and 40 penalty minutes for the Rebels.
Examiner.com had a chance to talk to Weller at today’s Prospect Development Camp session about his first look at the Valley and his time in the juniors.
Q: What is your impression of Phoenix so far?
A: It’s definitely different being out in the desert. It’s pretty hot. Getting used to this weather- it’s a bit of a change.
Q: How’s the Prospect Camp going for you so far? You’re wearing the major league colors. Is it hard to believe, or has it set in already?
A: It’s still kind of a shock right now. You dream about this growing up as a kid and finally wearing an NHL emblem on your chest is definitely humbling.
Q: Has it been hard for you to get in the swing of things here at camp?
A: It’s not that bad. Just getting used to the heat has been the biggest challenge.
Q: How do you think you did last year with Red Deer? Did you exceed your own expectations?
A: No, not really. I was actually kind of injured last year. I missed 40 games due to injury, so I kind of had a rough one last year.
Q: Are you headed back to red deer for the upcoming season?
A: Yes, I am.
Q: Is there any type of individual goals you’re looking to set for yourself in the upcoming season?
A: Definitely to be one of the top two defenseman on the team. Just to be a solid “shutdown” guy.
Q: Have the NHL and AHL coaches been a huge help to you during this camp?
A: Definitely, they’re showing us what we have to do to play at the pro level.
Q: Is there pressure to win in the WHL?
A: Yeah, definitely. Especially playing in Red Deer. We’re pretty big down there and there’s definitely lots of pressure on our team to win.
