The Ducks survived a late-game Coyotes surge.

The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-3, Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

The Ducks got things started off at the 2:49 mark of the first period when Teemu Selanne scored his ninth goal of the season on the power play to put his team up 1-0.

Anaheim added two in the second, one by Bobby Ryan with 7:16 left in the period and another one from Corey Perry with 2:53 left to give the Ducks a 3-0 cushion. The Ducks rout looked like it was on in the third period after Mike Brown’s second goal of the season made it 4-0, but the tide turned.

Keith Yandle scored his second of the season for Phoenix at the 6:27 mark of the period to cut the lead to three.

Not even a minute later Scottie Upshall cut the lead in half with his sixth of the season, and Shane Doan scored his fifth of the season at the 14:36 mark to trim the Anaheim lead to one, and that’s how the contest ended.

NOTES: Yesterday the Coyotes sent Mikkel Boedker back to the team’s AHL affiliate in San Antonio and they recalled defenseman Sean Heshka from the AHL to replace Ed Jovanovski in the lineup, who is day-to-day with a lower body injury.

Three stars of the game.

1. Scott Niedermayer (two assists)
2. Matthew Lombardi (two assists, three shots)
3. Shane Doan (goal, five shots, three hits)

Final thoughts

Needless to say, the Coyotes are going to need to cut down on the penalties. Again tonight, the team was called for delay of game (twice to be exact). Don’t be surprised if Head Coach Dave Tippett benches another player for undisciplined play if he thinks the need arises.

Up Next: The Coyotes take on the Montreal Canadiens at home on Thursday night. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m. AZ time.
