After a minor hiccup, Ilya Bryzgalov looks to be back on track.
The Phoenix Coyotes starting goalie stopped all 32 shots he faced to lead his team to a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues Thursday night at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
Both teams had a scoreless first period, but the Coyotes killed off three penalties in the period.
Daniel Winnik got Phoenix (8-4) on the board first by beating Blues (5-5-1) starting goaltender Ty Conklin with a wrist shot at the 2:48 mark of the second period.
The Coyotes expanded their lead at the 2:54 mark of the third period when Taylor Pyatt picked up his first goal of the season, with assists from Vernon Fiddler and Adrian Aucoin, to seal the game for Phoenix at 2-0.
Conklin stopped 27 of 29 shots in the losing effort, while Bryzgalov picked up his third shutout of the season and moved to 7-3 on the season.
NOTES: Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett scratched forward Scottie Upshall for tonight’s game because of the number of penalties he has taken of late… Phoenix re-assigned defenseman Sean Sullivan back to the team’s AHL affiliate in San Antonio on Thursday.
Anthony’s three stars
1. Ilya Bryzgalov (32 saves on 32 shots)
2. Vernon Fiddler (two assists)
3. Daniel Winnik (game-winning goal)
Final thoughts
Looks like the Coyotes have developed quite the one-two punch as far as goaltending goes. Both Ilya Bryzgalov and Jason LaBarbera are pushing each other and developing a “anything you can do, I can do better” mentality. It’s the type of rivalry most NHL teams wish they had in their dressing rooms.
