The penalties were just too much for the Phoenix Coyotes.
Led by Dustin Brown’s two goals, the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Phoenix Coyotes, 5-3, Saturday night at Jobing.com Arena.
Again, the Coyotes applied pressure early and the hard work paid off when Shane Doan scored his second goal of the season with 10:08 left in the first period to give his team the early 1-0 advantage.
Phoenix maintained the lead until the 4:41 mark of the second period when Brown tied it up, with assists from Anze Kopitar and Ryan Smyth.
Penalties then became an issue when Phoenix was penalized three times within a four minute span. L.A.’s Jarret Stoll was able to capitalize on a two-man advantage to give his team a 2-1 lead.
“We made some mental mistakes that come back to haunt you when you can’t give up four goals,” said Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett after the game. “Mental mistakes led to power play goals against [us].”
The third period started off tied at two, but goals by Jarret Stoll and Wayne Simmonds helped seal the game for the Kings.
Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick stopped 30 of 33 shots to earn the victory, while Phoenix’s Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 16 shots on 20 attempts for just his second loss of the season.
NOTES: Defenseman Sean Sullivan was called up from the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate in San Antonio, but did not dress for the game… The five goals Phoenix gave up tonight were the highest amount given up this season.
Quote of the game
“The team has played well since the start of the year. We saw them in the first game and they showed a solid effort away from the puck. They were really skating, and again they showed a lot of intensity away from the puck, we got a break and we’ll take the win.”- Kings head coach Terry Murray on the play of the Coyotes.
Anthony’s three stars
1. Jarret Stoll (two goals, including the game-tying goal)
2. Shane Doan (two goals)
3. Ed Jovanovski (two assists, three shots)
Final thoughts
While some of the calls by the officials might’ve been questionable, penalties certainly hurt the Coyotes tonight. The team has done a good job this season of playing disciplined and will need to get back on track for the upcoming road trip.
