In the second of as many games, the Phoenix Coyotes had another close contest at home.

This time the outcome was different though as Ed Jovanovski scored with 1:23 left in overtime as the Coyotes defeated the St. Louis Blues, 3-2, Thursday night at Jobing.com Arena.

The Coyotes controlled the tempo early on in the game, but once again had trouble scoring. The game remained scoreless until the 3:22 mark of the second period when David Backes picked up his first goal of the season to give St. Louis the lead.

The game remained 1-0 until the 9:24 mark of the second when Phoenix finally broke its long scoring drought when Shane Doan picked up his first goal of the year to tie the game up.

Tempo swung clearly in the Blues’ favor in the second period and it looked like they were going to take control of the game with 7:41 left in the period when Paul Kariya stole the puck away from Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle and quickly scored as he was coming out of his own zone.

“We had multiple opportunities to score in the second period; we came out of it with a 2-1 lead. We were trying to play assertive in their zone but their team is playing hard right now,” said Blues Head Coach Andy Murray after the game.

Scottie Upshall got his second goal of the season to tie the game up at two at the 8:27 mark of the third period.

NOTES: This was Phoenix’s first game without Mikkel Boedker, who was assigned to the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate in San Antonio on Wednesday… Forward Taylor Pyatt made his Coyotes debut tonight and got 14:29 of ice time.

Quote of the game

“It just went up in the air and I just saw him come barreling in and I don’t know. I don’t know what he got it with. He got it with some legal part of his body.”- Blues goaltender Chris Mason on Ed Jovanovski’s game-winning goal.

Anthony’s three stars

1. Ed Jovanovski (assist, game-winning goal)
2. Adrian Aucoin (assist, two blocked shots)
3. Scottie Upshall (game-tying goal)

Final thoughts

When watching the St. Louis Blues play, you can’t help but be reminded about how the Coyotes have been playing this season. The Blues fight for loose pucks and want to make you pay for your mistakes- something the Coyotes have been trying to do in this young season.
