For those looking for high performance lightweight rain gear, look no further than Marmot’s PreCip. This jacket and pant is an ideal shield to wet weather and are highly stowable, in fact both can be stuffed into a water bottle making it a great choice for backpackers.
The water resistance and high breathability are due to Marmot’s titular technology. They’ve taken “a polyurethane layer with microporous properties and added silicon dioxide particles creating small holes at regular intervals” this means that your sweat vapor works its way out of the garment while larger particles, like rainwater, are kept out. It also means, in the case of the PreCip line, that the outer most part of the jacket is going to soak up water. So here is a little tip. Use a DWR, like TX Direct on the jacket and pants, so as to minimize the wetting action.
Now you may be thinking “Why would I want a rain jacket that sucks in water?” This isn’t a detriment. In fact it is a normality for an abrasion and snag resistant outer. After all, it couldn’t keep out rain if it tears. This anti tear ability is something I can personally attest to as on a few hikes I thought I’d destroyed my jacket, only to be impressed by its durability. The reality is that applying a small amount of a DWR, like TX Direct solves this, if it presents an issue.
As for performance I can attest to the PreCip’s insulating ability having done some late fall hikes in the set using minimal insulating layers. Other notable features are the full sip side pants and the self stow pocket in the jacket. It also comes in women’s cuts and colors. The set retails for about 175 dollars.
In short, if you’re looking for a sturdy rain shedding layer, the Precip is a sure bet.
