Whatever your mood, Ellicott City's Diamondback Tavern fits the bill
Ellicott City has a new tavern in town, but don’t assume it’s the same-old, same-old. Diamondback Tavern (www.diamondbacktavern.com ) actually has the ability to satisfy four different kinds of customers: there’s a bar area that serves the full menu, a subdued and chic (decorated with photos by local art students) dining room for date night or family time, a sports bar upstairs, and even a stately venue room complete with working brick fireplace. The overall theme-vision of the place is to create a tavern in their historic building on Columbia Pike (just off historic Main Street) and serve traditional comfort/tavern foods (English-Scottish) with a true Maryland accent. Diamondback Tavern is just a few months old, owned by a trio of young Howard County natives and even their chef is a Howard County native. Of the trio, Lee Biars is the manager, and he is passionate about getting local purveyors for all their food. Even the meat for the meatloaf comes from up the street in Oella. Also, unlike your typical tavern where things go straight from the freezer to the fry pan, the emphasis at Diamondback Tavern is fresh and homemade. That means the gravies, the stocks, the dressings… even the mustards!
A tavern’s got to serve booze. Diamondback Tavern has a number of specialty top-shelf cocktails – refreshing – and of their six taps, four serve locally-brewed beers.
When you start with your appetizers, you’ll immediately taste what a difference homemade makes. Homemade bar food doesn’t have that overly salty and weirdly greasy taste. Diamondback Tavern has all your favorites – fried oysters, fries with gravy, wings. But if you’re in the mood for something different, you MUST try the Scotch eggs! They are simply hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage and fried. They are served with their homemade mustard, which is rich like a Hollandaise sauce. I hear it’s also popular for brunch and I can see why.
Another tasty appetizer is the fresh rockfish bites. They are lightly grilled – but still very tender – blackened, spiced up, and served with a homemade cilantro ranch dressing.
Diamondback Tavern has a number of choices for your main meal: chili, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. It was a little hard to choose, and that’s a good thing! Everything’s under $20 and many selections are under $10. Their meatloaf is an excellent choice. It’s probably different from your mom’s meatloaf, since they use veal, pork, and beef, mixed with veggies, but you’ll like it just the same. It’s served with a veggie and outstanding mashed potatoes with roasted garlic, so it’s quite the filling value.
If you’d like a good side to go with that, try the Granny Smith applesauce…it’s tart and spicy, served chunky and hot.
Another entrée to try is the popular shrimp and grits. It’s served with tasso ham gravy and the option of having shredded cheddar cheese. The shrimp are very fresh and large. The gravy is reminiscent of a New Orleans roux.
Do you have any room for dessert? The desserts are the only thing not made in-house…but they are from a fancy pastry maker in New York, very exquisite. They take everything to “a whole ‘nother level”.
