When I was the editor in chief of Southern Fried Magazine, I made a point of eating Southern food a lot. Most of the time, I had to hit the road -- face it, we're a little too border state-y to have a huge choice of such fare. The weather's been terrific and there are still a few outdoor eating days left. King St. Blues has several NoVa branches, including Old Town Alexandria. They also have outdoor, pet-friendly seating.
The food was homemade and pretty terrific. The "Southern" in this case seems to lean towards Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and other southwestern/southern flavors. Prices are reasonable, too.
Roadhouse Nachos are interesting: rustic homemade chips, sweet apple pork BBQ, and traditional nacho fixin's combine for something new.
The country fried chicken has homemade cream gravy -- maybe a touch on the very mild side -- has crisp-cooked, garlicky veggies and chunky red mashed potatoes with chopped scallions... just the way I make them! I approve, of course.
The French Quarter Po-Boy manages to get the fresh, tender shrimp found in the Big Easy. It's the best part of the sandwich, which could benefit from getting a local baker to do the bread. It's served with a tasty remoulade sauce.
They have lots of sides, including greens cooked with Tasso ham. (Well, it is Alexandria, after all.)
Service is very prompt and you can drink alcoholic beverages outside in Virginia.
