7th Annual Hawaiian Women's Expo held two weekends ago in Blaisdell showcased many local designers and brands.
I came to the scene at the last two hours on the last day and got to talk to only a few fashion exhibitors of the seemingly endless booths in the exhibition hall. And I missed a big chunk of the runway shows. Still I got the clue of Hawaiin fashion flavor: skin-revealing, colorful, and wearable.
In rhyme with the trends from the Spring 2010 New York Fashion Week, which takes a turn from fancy to accessible fashion, Hawaiian designers have local consumers in mind.
In the right photo, the tiered, ruffled and belted lapis lazuli dress worn on the first model gives a refreshing interpretation of Hawaiian wear. I especially like the transparent fabric, the color combo of blue, red-purple-pink and brown-yellow, and the detailed decoration in multiple print and surface techniques. If I were to name the gown, I would call it "tropical ocean" with layers of myriad sea life, rich in color, shape and texture. The belt, though following the current cinched waist trend, jars with the outfit, overcomplicating the visually loaded design.
Please take a look at the slideshow which includes cute swimwear, graphic tee and dress and men's wear. In them, you can find traces of a blossoming Hawaiin fashion industry. I will come up with feature stories on more local designers that I met at the Expo. Indeed, the event provided a healthy doze of exposure for local fashion creators.
