Austin, TX author Gabrielle Faust is at it once again with her scary mad marketing and PR skills. She has gathered a clawful of indie horror authors to do a live reading of original scary stories for the public just in time to get you geared up for Halloween. The author of the Eternal Vigilance trilogy (book 3 is in the works) calls the event "Blood of the Bean" and is unleashing it Saturday, October 17 on a hyped up and caffeinated public.
You may be wondering will it be scary and frightful fun? Isn't that a strange name for an event? Can beans bleed, do chickens have fingers, buffaloes have wings and where are the nuts of a grape?
Tha answer to the first two questions is a definite "Yes." I'll have to get back to you on the last question.
Ethan Nahté: What was the inspiration for “Blood of the Bean?”
Gabrielle Faust: I was actually inspired by a conversation I had with Lee Thomas at this year's ApolloCon convention in Houston. We were talking about coffee and the massive quantities that authors tend to consume over the course of a lifetime. I thought to myself, why not combine the two for a very special horror literary event? I have been wanting to organize an event for quite sometime.
EN: Why choose Kick Butt Coffee for the readings?
GF: First of all, Kick Butt Coffee has some of the best coffee in all of Austin. It's also one of the most unique and creative coffee shop concepts out there: martial arts and coffee! Brilliant! And, lastly, it's a local shop exclusive to Austin, Texas and I am all about supporting local businesses.
EN: I’m sure there may have been some other event or reason occurring later in the evening, but why not have the event later in the evening, after dark, to help make the stories a little scarier? Or are you anticipating the authors being horrific enough during daylight hours?
GF: We are aiming to reach a larger audience by allowing afternoon customers a chance to enjoy the event as well.
EN: What kind of stories can the audience expect to hear in regards to appropriateness for a public event and various ages?
GF: The participating authors will be reading genres that range from serial killers to zombies, werewolves, vampires...a little bit of everything. Short stories, novel excerpts and possibly even a bit of poetry. This is going to be a chance to hear a wide assortment of material from some very distinct and highly talented writers. As I put on the poster, THIS IS HORROR so all content may not be appropriate for very, very young children.
