Having lost four pets in the last three years, coping with the loss of my pets has never been far from my mind. As much as I’ve tried to work through the grief, I still tear up when I think of my pets—two of which were with me from the time I was a baby to the time I started college.
While there is no magic cure for the loss of a pet, talking about it can help. That is why the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) hosts a Pet Bereavement Group during the first Wednesday of every month for anyone who would like to work through their grief, or support others who are dealing with the emotions associated with losing a beloved pet.
Starting at 7:30pm in the AWLA’s Community Room, pet owners from all walks of life come together to remember their pets and the impact their pets had on their lives. From cats to bunnies, the AWLA provides a group of people who will be sympathetic to your grief, and not just write off your grief as something that you need to “get over.”
