While Partridges are famous for their prominent place in the traditional Christmas Carol “The 12 Day of Christmas” it turns out that Partridges can actually do a lot more than sit in Pear Trees looking pretty.

Now, onto the facts!

  • There are over 47 different types of Partridges. To view the full list, click here
     
  • The Chukar Partridge is the national bird of Pakistan
     
  • All Partridges have a distinctive call. For example, the Red-Legged Partridge calls “ka-chu-chu” while the Sand Partridge calls “kwa-kwa-kwa”
     
  • Female Grey Partridges can lay up to 20 eggs at a time
     
  • Grey Partridges don’t migrate
     
  • Grey Partridges often make their nest in winter wheat - a kind of cereal
     
  • During the first 10 days of their life, Grey Partridges can only eat insects
     
  • See-See Partridges tend to run rather than fly when they’re startled or afraid
     
  • Long-billed Partridges, Hill Partridges, and Madagascar Partridges live in tropical forests
     
  • Most Partridges are considered endangered
