Vinya: Room Setting

With frugality in fashion, furniture consignment stores are a great place to find unique furnishings at bargain prices. Consignment stores sell gently-used upholstery, tables, entertainment centers, lamps and accessories. The style, condition and price of the merchandise varies considerably, yet it’s a sure bet that the merchandise will be distinctive.

Like pre-owned cars, all consignment pieces are sold “as is.” Some may need to be cleaned, repainted or refinished while others are great just as they are. The better the condition, the higher the price. Antiques or furniture from brand-name designers tend to be not so wallet-friendly. Furniture in consignment stores sells quickly and is replaced just as rapidly. As a result, there is a constant flow of “new” exciting items.

I’ve personally visited the hottest consignment stores, and in this article and future articles I’ll profile some of my favorites. Also check out The Consignment Association of Dallas/CAD (consignmentdallas.com) for a comprehensive list of locations.

For those who can’t live without high-end designer furnishings and aren’t shy about comparison shopping, there’s Vinya. Located in a contemporary two-story, gold stucco building on Buena Vista at Fitzhugh, this store has “designer” written all over it. Prices range from $50 to $3,500 for the unusual, one-of-a-kind items.

Your first impression tells you this can’t be a consignment store. The room settings of furniture are artfully arranged in collections too coordinated to be randomly consigned decor. They look too good. How is it that all these furnishings coordinate so well together? The answer is Debra Owens who works to ensure the harmonized presentation.

Designer names and manufacturers are easily recognized. A 1975 Milo Baughman dining table with two leaves is $3,500. A vintage Knoll Barcelona chair is $2,500. The open floor plan and natural light from the store’s many windows make it easy to navigate and the furniture easy to see.

If these prices are a bit of a challenge, take the stairs to the second floor where smaller furnishings and additional accents are more casually priced. Make a point to notice the white feather ball Egyptian hanging lamp – you’ll find you have to have it.
