The deadline for filing petitions to enter the February 2, 2010 primary election has finally arrived. This has generated more activity than normal because of unique circumstances that have occurred in Illinois.
The last person elected to the vacant U.S. Senate seat is now the President of the United States. His replacement was picked by a governor that was impeached and removed from office. He was replaced, via the Illinois Constitution, by the Lieutenant Governor, which has historically been the least attractive state-wide office. But, because Illinois has just experienced how through luck and timely indictments, the “Lite Guv” can end up sitting in the big chair, this Lieutenant Governor’s race has a surprisingly large number of entrants.
This election also features some other oddities that should make this campaign season interesting. Four races, U.S. Senate, Lt. Governor, Comptroller and Treasurer, do not feature incumbents, which could explain why there are a lot of "new names" running and a couple of candidates doing a “Brett Favre” and coming out of political retirement.
