When it comes to the movie, Twilight is basically a fanservice gone wrong.
It isn't a good movie at all to the casual observer. Bad acting, pacing, countless shots of teenagers 'gazing lovingly' into each other's eyes. Horrible, stalker-esque shots of Edward in Bella's room while she's asleep. Poor choices from the director about directing the vampires to act 'feral', if feral means like a 5-year-old pretending to be a lion.
But for the fans, it's something more. It has to be; what other reason would it have made over $190 million at the box office?
It catches moments that teenage girls were already fantasizing about; those of them who lack creativity get the visuals they need, and those who don't get to critique it. It's hard to expolain the hysteria for this movie, or book for that matter, even having been part of it. I couldn't really tell you what the appeal is.
To give credit where it's due, there's a decent soundtrack and interesting camera-work. Cinematography is okay. And there's a great RiffTrax. It's fun to make fun of Jasper and Edward's faces throughout the movie. Charlie is portrayed amazingly; his part has got to be the funniest.
Still, though, I've got to wonder if they could have done better, if they could have possibly done better. A part of me thinks that they could, but at the same time, isn't this exactly the niche Twilight made for itself?
I remember being a super-fan way back when, when MTV films first picked up the rights to produce a Twilight movie. The fans were in hysterics, much like Buffy fans are now. How could MTV possibly get a single thing right? Why would they do this? Surely this will be the worst soundtrack ever given to a movies...
MTV films dropped the rights to it, only to have Summit Entertainment swoop in shortly after. And, about a year later, we have this masterpiece.
And the sequel comes out this fall. God help me, I'll be in the theater, watching, of my own volition.
