Anyone who knows about the Universe of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (referring to the series) knows something of the flop of a movie that occurred in 1992. Joss Whedon, writer of the movie and, later, the TV series, walked off set of this, his first motion picture, declaring that he couldn't deal with it anymore.
He claimed that the people in charge of the movie had 'ruined' his screenplay, that they had made it campy. Five years after the movie flopped, Joss brought Buffy back as a hit tv series.
Now, Kazui Enterprizes, the company that owns the rights to all things 'Buffy' and the producers of the original movie, have decided on a remake without Joss Whedon, the man behind the writing.
Joss's only response? 'I hope it's good.'
Fans everywhere are disappointed and angry, to the point of planning riots.
The way a lot of them see it, and I can't say that I completely disagree, Kazui wanted to strike while the vampire iron was hot after the success of Twilight.
The movie will not include any of the stories or characters from the television series, excepting possibly Buffy herself, and is said to be a 'modern' version of the mythos.
While I'm unsure if they intend to recreate the character of 'Buffy' or just give a new girl her name, it should prove to be interesting at the very least.
As a hard-core Buffy fan myself, a part of me has to agree that this Buffy couldn't really be Buffy, the Buffy I know and love. At the same time, I can't be so pessimistic as to boycott it. It may turn out okay. Nothing like the 'real' Buffy, but good in it's own way.
There has been no casting as of right now, so my one hope is that they don't cast someone form High School Musical or Twilight to add fuel to the die-hard fans' fires, or torches, as it were.
