The people of Minnesota have a Senator and it is Al Franken. The Democrats in D.C. are delighted with the idea of Franken coming to the Senate, do not be fooled that they are nervous in the least. This delight may turn into regret, but right now there are many little things Franken has done that make a beltway liberal drool.
First, Al is a comedian, the de facto news vehicle for the Democratic Party. The New York Times could be on the bottom of a bird cage, CNN could cover celebrity news and compete with E! MSNBC could just become Air America TV and the Democrats would be fine. E!, Comedy Central and SNL win the elections for them, as we saw with Tina Fey.
Al also is one of the few who took on Rush Limbaugh and came out better for it. He didn't do any real damage, because his book was merely jokes and ad hominem attacks, but he made a lot of money by affirming some peoples hatred of Rush. Hatred is the operative word, just read the Amazon reviews. Five star reviews are those who craved affirmation, one star reviews highlight those who saw how ineffectual Franken's work was. Al used his cachet after writing this book to become the main draw on Air America. Air America was not a success and Franken failed miserably to match Limbaugh's ratings so now the left will go with "local control" to arrest talk radio. Franken can be counted on to aid this process.
The third feather in Al's cap, is that he successfully defeated Fox News in court. Al wrote another book, one that lampoons the right, but mostly Fox and Bill O'Reilly. The court case brought against Franken was thrown out, Franken's sales were probably boosted and Al himself named a segment on Air America the O'Franken Factor just to rub it in Bill's face. This short lived stunt didn't save Air America either.
If you are still in doubt, consider then that Democrats are throwing this freshman Senator right into deciding our health care and he will actually participate in the Senate Judiciary committee's hearing for SCOTUS nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
For better or for worse, America has elected a comedian to the Senate. Perhaps it's fitting for these times, because many of the policies coming out of D.C. are a joke.
