Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina, admitted to having an extra-marital affair with someone from Argentina. He said the relationship began innocently through emails, and blossomed into a sexual relationship last year. The Governor was missing from June 18th until June 24th, 2009, and many of his critics drove the story of his absence. The Governor's wife, Jenny Sanford, was unconcerned about his disappearance on Father's Day weekend. His spokesman claimed the Governor was 'hiking the Appalachian Trail', a phrase destined to enter the political lexicon. Sanford's critics like state Sen. Jake Knotts, R-West Columbia, said "Lies. Lies. Lies. That's all we get from his staff. That's all we get from his people. That's all we get from him." Sanford was caught coming back from Buenos Aires, Argentina by intrepid reporter Gina Smith, of The State. Sanford gave her a quick interview, in which he said he switched from hiking the trail to something more "exotic". Governor Mark Sanford, once a 2012 hopeful, has resigned as chair of the Republican Governor's Association, replaced by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour.
