Rembrandt van Rijn was one of the most talented and respected painters in the course of history. His works are trademarked by his signature heavy brush strokes and lighting. Even though he died centuries ago, his beautiful paintings live on in some of the world's most famous galleries and museums.
Starting Sunday, July 12th and running through August 23rd, The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana will open an exhibit entitled Sordid and Sacred: The Beggars in Rembrandt's Etching featuring one of the artists' favorite subject matters. The exhibit is set to include thirty-five etchings from the late artist dated between 1629 and 1654.
The official web site of the Museum explains it better than this writer ever could:
Rembrandt's images document and humanize the vagrant population living in 17th century Dutch society that considered these individuals repulsive and outcast. Often using biblical subjects and narratives, Rembrandt draws parallels in many of the etchings between the plight of the homeless and derelict, and figures such as Joseph, Mary and Jesus. Each etching on paper executed in a style closer to drawing than engraving portrays individualism, character and emotion of each figure rendered, beckoning the viewer's empathy and compassion.
Another interesting event put on by the Museum is their celebration of Rembrandt's 403rd birthday on Wednesday, July 15th from 10am-4pm. The event boasts performances, access to the exhibition and a film screening. To make things a bit more fun, the Museum suggests that patrons show up in full Renaissance dress in order to create an ambiance. If you decide to dress up for the event, your admission to the museum is free and you receive a free piece of cake when eating at the Museum's cafe.
Hours: Tues. - Sun. 10am-4pm.
Admission: Adults $12, seniors, students, children (ages 6 yrs+) $9, children under the age of 6 are free. Hint: Admission for all is free the first Sunday of the month all day as well as the third Tuesday of the month for Santa Ana residents.
