In the Asian Community, Mental Illness carries a stigma, as a person is often shunned by family and friends & is considered a disgrace to his/her ancestors. In the days after September 11th, 2001, many Asians were thrown out of work. Many were traumatized by these events.
Entering the picture is St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Center. They began to sponsor a Free Acupuncture clinic in Chinatown, in response to the mental health problems of those displacd Asian workers.
Currently the clinic is at the American Legion Hall on the 2nd floor at 193 Canal Street, on Wednesdays from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Those seeking treatment come into a meeting hall with folding chairs. They receive an alcohol pad to dab the ears with. There is also free herbal tea, dubbed ''Sleep Tea'', which is said to encourage relaxation.
It's Auricular Acupuncture, where hair thin needles are inserted into 5 points on each ear. The technique was devoloped by French and Chinese doctors, but Dr Michael O. Smith, MD, @ Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, developed this wellness protocol to help drug addicts to break their addictions as an alternative to Methdone. It is also used in smoking cessation programs, and with alcoholics who desire to quit drinking.
It's good medicine, which works even better with the herbal tea. It's open to everybody, regardless of race or creed. Best of all-it's FREE.
