The first results for this last August Personalities Match-Up are in and fear factored into what made the box office turnstiles click with plenty of fire. The hot debut of "The Final Destination" closes out August as the Summer Movies of 2009 start their cool down.

America booked passage to "The Final Destination" in strong numbers to post the popular horror franchise's best opening ever with $28.3 million from 3,121 theaters, scalping "Halloween II" in the process.

While The Weinstein Company's Rob Zombie-directed horror show didn't score a direct hit, its Quentin Tarantino-directed "Inglourious Basterds" still gave the company something to smile about.  The WWII epic starring Brad Pitt (pictured right) took second place with $20 million in its second weekend, bringing its total up to $73.8 million. Meanwhile, "H2" debuted with $17.4 million from 3,025 sites for third place.

Rounding out the Weekend Final Five:

Neill Blomkamp's "District 9" is edging closer to $100 million. One of the year's most inventive hits, the sci-fi drama tallied up another $10.7 million to bring its overall cume to $90.8 million. And "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" captured fifth place with $8 million for a total of $132.4 million to date.,393 theaters.

Now that August is one for the books, what will September and the advent of a busy Fall Movies schedule bring audiences? Will they what to discover "All About Steve" with the power coupling of Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper (pictured left)? Or will they log on to the extreme thrills of Gerard Butler in "Gamer?" Perhaps they'll develop a comedic taste for Mike Judge's "Extract" with Jason Bateman and Mila Kunis?  Find out next weekend in Examiner.com!
