With the 2009 film year going down as the most desperate of any decade, the idea of flaunting Oscar candidates in a time of economic adversity seems tasteless. So, what makes Tom Ford's classy "A Single Man" more than just eye candy for the industry set? With its stars Colin Firth and Julianne Moore both giving performances at the peak of their abilities, "A Single Man" looks to harken back to when Miramax ruled the indie film roost.
Of course, it is no coincidence that Harvey and Bob Weinstein are releasing the film on December 11th, just in time for awards consideration. The on-line release of the film's trailer offers a stylish look into what is being deemed by the film festival circuit as an unforgettably human and honest drama. It also ushers in the arrival of Ford's talent as a filmmaker, even if the ad campaign plays off his past career as the savior of Gucci.
For every "Precious," there is the flip side to indie film, the tony adaptation of a classic work by some really cool people. A little haute cinema is welcome anytime, but chances are "A Single Man" may also spotlight Firth and Ford as the men of the season. After viewing the trailer below, what are your thoughts?
