Hayden Panettiere, 19, has let it be known to Hollywood filmmakers she is willing to do nudity in film. The “Heroes” star was quoted this week by the Sun as saying she is open to full frontal nudity in a feature film. Hayden stated, “I could be thirty years old and just be like ‘screw it-I want to take it all off. Better take a picture of this before it all goes.’
Being an actress in Hollywood has called for females to be open to the idea of full frontal nudity in films. Hayden Panettiere would only be the latest of actresses to succumb to the pressure of success as an actress. Over the past two years, actresses that have made it known that nudity is not going to be a part of their career, have turned tail to their convictions. The most recent being Natalie Portman and Jessica Biel.
Natalie Portman appeared nude in the 2007 independent release “Hotel Chevalier.” The film did not garner the backing of critics, and faired modestly at the box office gross. Natalie Portman, 28, has been quoted to have regretted doing the nude scene because of the exploitation the scene has received from the internet sites such as MR. SKIN.
Jessica Biel, 27, has also made the decision to appear nude for the sake of “art” in film. Jessica’s full frontal was featured in the 2009 direct to video release “Powder Blue.” The production was not of “academy” stature as the film, even at the direct to video moniker, had one of the worst overall review results of 2009. Rotten Tomatoes.com statistic tracker showed “Powder Blue” received a lowly 14% positive feedback. Jessica’s decision to appear nude in film at first scared her, now the decision should disappoint the picturesque actress. Jessica Biel did have her agent put in one of the most detailed nudity specific conditions ever seen by Hollywood. Biel had the provision that she would have final say of the nudity usage as well as provisions regarding filmed height levels capturing her backside and only foward facing chest footage.
Nudity in film can be traced back as far as the 1915 silent film "Inspiration." The actress attached to the "honor" of sorts was Audrey Munson. As feature films evolved, Cecil B. Demille exploited nude scenes into one of his early epic's "The Sign of the Cross." Jayne Mansfield may be the vision of celebrity nudity in general publications that inspired the movement of mainstream actresses vying for notoriety by means of nakedness. Mansfield was featured nude in Playboy magazine in 1963.
Although there has been moments that have transcended the trend of nudity in film including the 2001 film Monster’s Ball starring Halle Berry in her most explicit nude scene that returned her “investment of the flesh” with an Academy Award for Best Actress. Acting women in the film industry that include Hayden Panettiere should take some time, then a moment of self-searching on the internet, and make certain that the nudity decision is for the quality of the film and the quality of a career.
