Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’s rock ‘em sock ‘em robots lead an explosive weekend for the Hollywood box office with an estimated weekend gross of $112 million. The highly anticipated sequel starring Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox, exceeded expectations but could not top last years The Dark Knight.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had an opening day of $60.6 million on Wednesday, $16 million of which came from midnight screenings packed with eager fans, resulting in the second highest grossing opening day to The Dark Knight’s $67.2 million in 2008 according to Box office Mojo.

The week continued at a record pace for the alien robots with a knack for transformation, setting non-opening day records for Thursday and Friday of $28.6 million and $36.7 million respectively. The IMAX screenings on those days were $4 million for Thursday and $2.3 million for Friday.

Overall, the weekend box office was up from the previous week, with many holdover films remaining fixtures in the top grossing positions. The Proposal held strong with a second weekend take of an estimated $18.5 million. The Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock romantic comedy has weathered mixed reviews to gross nearly $70 million through two weeks. The Proposal was followed by the breakout hit of the summer, The Hangover, with $17.2 million grossed in its fourth week in release. The buddy comedy about a Las Vegas bachelor party gone terribly wrong has become the toast of the comedic viewing public this summer. In the fourth spot is the family adventure comedy by Disney/Pixar animation studio, UP. UP grossed $13 million in its fifth week in release and officially became the number one movie of the year surpassing Star Trek. UP has grossed $250.2 million since it opened on June 8th.

With the upcoming film release of both Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs starring Ray Romano and Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be in a battle that could be more than meets the eye.
