Evelyn Glennie performs with the DSO this weekend

It wasn’t too long ago that I was a camper at Interlochen Arts Camp hearing the talented Evelyn Glennie perform for the first time on a hot summer night. The outside theatre was packed as students were hypnotized by her complex percussion rhythms and interpretations. Her fantastic talent has transformed the traditional notion of percussion as rhythmic background supplements into very capable solo instruments. She has commissioned over 50 concertos among countless recital and concert pieces.
She will be in Detroit this weekend performing with the DSO. Ludovic Morlot will be conducting with Evelyn Glennie on solo percussion including Glennie’s own arrangement of Vivaldi’s Piccolo Concerto. The program includes the following:
DEBUSSY Ibéria
TOWER Strike Zones
VIVALDI/GLENNIE Piccolo Concerto, arranged for Vibraphone
ELGAR Enigma Variations
I would be interested to hear the Elgar enigma Variations as well; they are several shorter pieces with varying styles. I remember playing a few of them in college with one variation being particularly beautiful.
Performance times are 10:45 a.m. Friday, 8:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Visit
