As details begin to emerge from the horrific mass shooting at Fort Hood military base in Texas, people across the country are trying to cope with the tragedy that left 13 people dead and dozens of others wounded.  When unfathomable acts such as these occur, many people are left with a sense of helplessness and despair.  Getting involved in the care of those affected by this tragedy can give one a sense of purpose in an otherwise senseless tragedy.

Carter Blood Care, the sole supplier of blood to 16 hospitals in Central Texas, is providing a lifeline to those wounded in the Fort Hood shooting.  They are also providing an opportunity to help by asking for blood donations that will aid in the recovery of those victims.  Type O-negative blood is especially needed in Central Texas at this time.

If you are in the Central Texas area and willing to donate blood you should call 1-800-DONATE or 1-800-366-2834 to schedule an appointment.  Type O-negative blood is a universal donation, which means it can be given to any patient.  However, few people have the blood type, which is making the call for donors even more urgent.  Although donations are being encouraged at this time for the Fort Hood victims, it is important to remember the need for donors year round.  Consider donating in the future, regardless of your blood type.  For places to donate in Metro Detroit, check out bloodbanker.com to find a donation center in your area.
