And now, a story to help usher in spring. Even those of us who don't have a garden of our own can get caught up in the excitement of planting seeds and watching vegetables grow in our own backyards. It's been a while since we've had the chance to look to the First Family for any sort of ideas about food or nutrition. But that's all going to change now. The New York Times has an in-depth article about the new organic vegetable garden being planted at the White House by the First Family. It's the first vegetable garden to be panted at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt's Victory Garden.
The excellent gardening blog Garden Rant also has some posts about the garden, whose progress they have been following closely. The garden will cost about $200 to plant, the chief gardener is a young chef and food activist named Sam Kass, also the Obama's chef, and they are also planning to grow berries and keep bees for their own honey.
The Obamas are know for enjoying their food and making healthy choices. The planting of this garden may well have positive repercussions across the country, particularly since it's also being used as an opportunity to teach school kids about growing their own food.
This is simply the most exciting news I have seen in weeks.
