Chances are you've driven it before, maybe even a few times. Usually you're too busy checking your phone, or worse, fearfully anticipating the oncoming car that's wrecklessly veered into your lane just past the blind curve ahead. It's Mulholland Drive, home to so many Hollywood celebrities that it inspired its own movie. It's also a great place to get away.
Named after William Mulholland, the architect of LA's water supply (he conceived and supervised the cyphoning of water from the Owens Valley in Central Calfornia in 1913, though a few years later it ran dry,) this winding road that lines the ridge of the Hollywood Hills offers some of the most spectacular views in all of LA.
Driving from Beverly Glen to Coldwater Canyon Rd, you'll find a host of sweeping overlooks and parking pullouts. On one side, there's the dry, sprawling valley -- home to hundreds of thousands of people and businesses. On the other, there are lush green hills and, on a clear day, views of the Pacific. In between, you'll find outrageous homes, a pleasant breeze, and suddenly, some perspective in your life.
Next time you're searching for your boss' house or heading back from the Valley, take a breath, put down your phone, ease off the accelerator a bit, and enjoy the vistas. You'll be glad you did.
